The Gem of Canadian Science that Harper Killed

Over the Victoria Day weekend Canadians lost another vital national institution that quietly stood on guard for the nation's 4 million lakes.

Just as citizens flocked to their cottages and launched their boats, the government of Stephen Harper pulled the plug on Canada's greatest freshwater defender and scientific achievement: the Experimental Lakes Area.

And though its muzzled scientists haven't been able to talk about the program's impressive research in recent years without Ottawa's approval, this uniquely Canadian endeavor both changed and educated the world. It also drove global public policy on watershed protection.

In a move that stunned and appalled scientists around the world the Harper government laid off as many as 40 scientists associated with the legendary program working out the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Winnipeg's office.

According to Ottawa's tiresome newspeak, the program no longer "aligned with the department's mandate and is not responding to our research priorities."

...and the DOJ comes riding into Florida on its white charger

DOJ to Florida: Stop noncitizen voter purge. Will FL fight DOJ?

U.S. Department of Justice ordered Florida’s elections division to halt a systematic effort to find and purge the state’s voter rolls of noncitizens.

Florida’s effort appears to violate both the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minorities, and the 1993 National Voter Registration Act – which governs voter purges -- Christian Herren, the DOJ’s lead civil rights lawyer, wrote in a detailed two-page letter sent late Thursday night.Read more... )

Mississippi Has Highest Teen Pregnancy Rate in the U.S.

Despite the fact that the number of teen pregnancies has steadily declined over the last decade, 55 births in 1,000 still occur among 15- to 19-year-olds in the state of Mississippi compared to a national average of 34.3 according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

The state is has the highest rate of teen pregnancies in the nation, a statistic that Governor Phil Bryant has created a task force to combat, a giant leap forward in a state that traditionally avoids discussing the topic at all.

Hosni Mubarak sentenced to life in prison for ordering troops to fire on protesters

An image taken from Egyptian state TV shows ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak sitting inside a cage in a courtroom during his verdict hearing in Cairo Saturday.

Ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison Saturday after he was convicted of ordering troops to open fire on demonstrators, a verdict that saw angry protesters disrupt the proceedings.

Punches were thrown as victims' family members protested the verdict inside the court. Others stood on chairs, raising fists in the air and chanting the sentence was not enough.

Mubarak and the judge were removed from the courtroom amid the melee.

The sentence handed down by Judge Ahmed Refaat was the final chapter of Mubarak's three decade, iron rule of Egypt that was brought to an end in February 2011.

Before a packed courtroom, Refaat praised the revolution and said it offered people relief after living "in 30 years of dark without any hope."

About 840 people died and more than 6,000 others were wounded in the uprising, according to Amnesty International.

Refaat chose the lesser of two sentences. Mubarak could have received the death penalty.

Former Interior Minister Habib El Adly was also convicted of ordering security forces to kill protesters and sentenced to life in prison. El Adly was convicted in May of corruption and money laundering, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

But Refaat cleared Mubarak's sons -- Gamal and Alaa -- and a handful of Mubarak's aides.

Mubarak and his sons arrived Saturday morning at the Cairo Police Academy, where the trial was held, under tight security. Police in riot gear lined up behind a barricade separating them from demonstrators.

Hundreds outside the court chanted: "Execution is the only solution" and "he who kills must die."

Families of those killed during the protests carried posters emblazoned with photos of the dead while dozens of Mubarak supporters chanted ''innocent.''

Is "living simply" the answer?

The collective problems of a society require collective solutions.
---

INTERNATIONAL PROTESTS against globalization have cast a bright light on how transnational corporations run roughshod over ordinary people's lives everywhere.

In reaction, activists have come up with a broad range of responses--from demonstrations in the streets to personal choices about consumption.

Most activists don't see any contradiction between protesting in Washington, D.C., against George W. Bush's theft of the White House and deciding to eat only organic food or ride a bicycle to reduce pollution.

But mass collective action and changing your personal consumption habits imply very different approaches to changing the world.

This isn't an argument against anyone deciding to make personal changes that suit them. People should have the right to eat and live as they please. But can such choices have any significant impact on society?

Green Lantern is gay! No, not that one....and not that one either.

DC Comics’ New Gay Character Is Green Lantern Alan Scott

DC Comics has been teasing the reveal of a major gay character for some time, and they’ve finally revealed who it will be: Alan Scott, known as Green Lantern, a media mogul, will be revealed to be gay in a story that resets his character. When this news came out, I said it would be best if the supposedly-iconic character DC was going to have come out was someone for whom the revelation that he or she was gay helped tie together things we’d always known about the character and their personality, much as J.K. Rowling did with Albus Dumbledore. I’m not sure if a pure reset of an existing character quite does that. And over at Topless Robot, Rob Bricken explains that the move isn’t as bold as DC insisted it would be, in part because Scott is not even the most prominent Green Lantern in comics today, and in part because his arc as a gay man will be taking place in an alternate DC Comics universe, rather than altering our sense of the core universe, where a straight Alan Scott presumably is still going about his business.

DC Comics was never going to turn one of their genuinely iconic characters gay. An out and proud Batman would have been a great joke on moralists like Frederic Wertham, the psychiatrist who saw sexual perversion everywhere he looked in comic books. A gay Superman would have been a fascinating exploration of what it means to feel like an alien in human society. But it’s hard to imagine that DC would have done something so bold simply to demonstrate its commitment to diversity, or to compete in a market where Marvel Comics, and even Archie Comics, are directly selling themselves both to gay readers and to straight readers who live among and love the gay people in their lives.

Checking the box and including a gay character in your universe, whether you frame them as a stereotype or develop them well or not, isn’t really enough to earn a company points anymore. And I actually think the somewhat disappointed reaction to this revelation is a good thing because it suggests that our expectations are getting more ambitious. If companies want credit for doing something different and genuinely brave, rather than simply meeting their basic obligations to represent the world around them, they need to tell stories or highlight kinds of characters that no one else has the courage to represent. The L.A. Complex gets points for portraying gay characters who aren’t white and male, the standard television default. Happy Endings gets credit for showing us a gay man who’s chubby, romantic, semi-downwardly mobile. Maybe DC Comics will do something genuinely exciting with Alan Scott, but it’s fine not to shower the company with gratitude for simply nodding towards a diversity quota, and doing so with the same kind of gay person who’s been acceptable in pop culture for years: rich and white.

Getting rather tired of all the dudebro comments saying it should have Wonder Woman or Power Girl...

Republican spokesman: ‘Let's hurl some acid' at female Democratic senators

Jay Townsend, a campaign spokesman for Republican Rep. Nan Hayworth (NY-19) has ignited a controversy after he said, "Let's hurl some acid" at female Democratic senators.

Townsend's comments (which have since been removed) were posted Thursday on a local Facebook discussion forum for New York's 19 th congressional district. Townsend was responding to comments made by a commenter named "Tom" during an online debate over gas prices. Townsend wrote:

"Listen to Tom. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz. My question today … when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let's hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won't abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector."

Hayworth's office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Townsend is described on his own personal website an "adept wordsmith," and is far from a political newcomer. In 2010, he was the Republican nominee in the U.S. Senate race against Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer. Townsend eventually lost that race by 18 points. He has worked on more than 300 campaigns in 25 different states, according to his website.

The campaign for Rich Becker, who is running to unseat Hayworth, posted a statement online Thursday calling for Townsend to be fired.

"I'd be fired - immediately and with cause - if I said stuff like this. Which begs the question: why is Jay Townsend still Nan Hayworth's spokesman," wrote Becker campaign spokesman Barry Caro. "Does she agree that 'bin Laden is dead in spite of Obama?' Does she agree that we should 'hurl some acid' at politicians her campaign disagrees with? These comments are simply unprofessional and should never cross the lips of a Congressional spokesman."

Illinois Lawmaker Says Reaction To His Epic Outburst 'Mostly Positive'

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Screaming, swearing and referencing the Bible, a red-faced Illinois Rep. Mike Bost punched at papers he threw in the air while lambasting the state's powerful House speaker. Then he swiped his microphone away and flopped back in his chair in a silent sulk.

The Republican's videotaped tirade is creating an online stir, and he said Thursday that he's received mostly positive reaction since his outburst Tuesday on the Illinois House floor.

He said he's been surprised by the attention, since his echoed similar outbursts directed at Speaker Michael Madigan and Democrats over the years by Republicans, the minority party at the Capitol.

Bost said his frustration was a long time coming. The tipping point came as lawmakers prepared to vote on a contentious plan to overhaul the state's overburdened pension system, and Democrats used a 1995 rule to block debate or amendments. Bost, from Murphysboro in southern Illinois, erupted.

Virginia tech proposes cutting down colonial era forest to make way for sports facility

When it comes to recruiting, Virginia Tech’s athletics department is taking an “if we build it, they will come” approach, with plans to construct a new $20 million indoor practice facility for its football and other sports teams near Lane Stadium on the university campus.

The Hokies have the third-longest college bowl game streak in the country, and have sold out every game since 1998. However, they have yet to win a national championship. The athletics department hopes a state-of-the-art facility nearer to the football stadium could help change that.

There’s only one problem: A densely wooded area chock full of old-growth trees, some older than the United States itself, is in the way.

Blueprint plans that have been in the works for over a decade would require chopping down at least 60 trees over the age of 150. Six of the trees have been found to be more than 300 years old.

A group called Friends of Stadium Woods and Virginia Tech professor John Seiler are determined not to let those trees come down.

Seiler, a professor of forest biology and a tree physiology specialist, has dedicated his entire career to the university and often takes his students into these 11 acres of woods to teach. So when he was told by university administration officials that they believed no tree in the woods was more than 80 years old and the new facility site was a “done deal,” Seiler decided to do something about it.

In January, he bought a large increment borer — a tool used to extract a section of wood from a living tree used to determine its age — and took a walk into the familiar woods.

After testing a few trees, he discovered something amazing.

“This was like catching a big fish for me,” he said, pointing to a small slice of wood in his office. “That wood was formed from carbon dioxide in the air, turned into wood by photosynthesis, in 1697.”

Seiler believes the forest is a national treasure and should be saved. “The forest is in fact an endangered species in the United States. It’s literally the rarest type of forest structure left in the United States.”

"Don't believe what I do? That's a beating."

National Review Writer: Conservatives Should ‘Beat’ Young People Who ‘Think Socialism Is Better Than Capitalism’

The National Review’s Jonah Goldberg is claiming that 18-year-olds should be denied the right to vote because they are “so frickin’ stupid about so many things.” In a video first posted by the Daily Caller, Goldberg laments the culture’s obsession with youth and argues that conservatives should “beat out” young people’s belief that “socialism is better than capitalism.” Goldberg is the third National Review writer in two months to face controversy:

GOLDBERG: Personally, I think the voting age should be much, higher, not lower. I think it was a mistake to lower it to 18, to be brutally honest….[I]t is a simple fact of science that nothing correlates more with ignorance and stupidity than youth. We’re all born idiots, and we only get over that condition as we get less young. And yet there’s this thing in this culture where, ‘Oh, young people are for it so it must be special.’ No, the reason young people are for it because they don’t know better. That’s why we call them young people.

The fact that young people think socialism is better than capitalism. That’s proof of what social scientists call their stupidity and their ignorance. And that’s something that conservatives have to beat out of them. Either literally or figuratively as far as I’m concerned.

The magazine fired popular conservative columnist John Derbyshire in April after he topped off a long history of racism and sexism by advising children to avoid “concentrations of black.” It later ended its relationship with Robert Weissberg, who had ties to the white nationalist group American Renaissance.

Heard the one about the ladyboy? Media jokes about trans people are not acceptable.

Impressionist Morgana Robinson claimed last week that: “you can tell a tranny by their hands and their feet.”

Does the star of Channel 4’s Very Important People congratulate herself when she spies a woman with large shoes? Does she smile and think “Ah, look, it’s one of those trannies”, or is she humble; does she see it as an easy-peasy guessing game? I can only speculate.

I’m a trans woman and I hear these stupid comments daily. “Transsexual” has become shorthand for someone ridiculous, someone unnamed, someone that nice, middle-class people probably don’t know. Transphobia has passed the dinner table test because those who mock trans people simply don’t expect to see one of us at their dinner tables. I’d like to petition high profile trans newsreaders and politicians to raise awareness, but none exist. Trans people are today’s Aunt Sallys – and comics throw pies at us with impunity.

Judge revokes George Zimmerman's bond

A judge has revoked the bond of the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and ordered him returned to jail within 48 hours.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester said Friday that George Zimmerman misled the court about how much money he had available when his bond was set for $150,000 in April. Prosecutors claim Zimmerman had $135,000 available that had been raised by a website he set up.

Prosecutors also say he failed to surrender a second passport.

The defense says the finances are an innocent misunderstanding.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and is claiming self-defense.

Peter Tatchell: Why won’t the Queen embrace the queens?

Ever since the public relations blunders at the time of Princess Diana’s death, the Queen has gone to great lengths to be more in touch with the mood of country. She presents the monarchy as modern, compassionate and inclusive; often referring to the value of a diverse multicultural, multifaith society.

On one issue, however, she remains curiously out of step with public opinion. Whereas most of us now welcome and embrace lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, the Queen has never done so.

While I doubt that Elizabeth II is a raging homophobe, she certainly doesn’t appear to be gay-friendly. Not once in her 60-year reign has she publicly acknowledged the existence of the LGBT community – or gay members of her own royal family. The Queen has turned her back on queens.

While she has spoken approvingly of the UK’s many races and faiths, for six decades she has ignored LGBT Britons. Judging from her silence, it seems that we are the unspeakable ones – the people she cannot bear to acknowledge or mention in public. If she treated black and Asian Britons in the same way, she’d be denounced as a racist. Why the double standards?

Regardless of whether these omissions are a reflection of the Queen’s personal views or the result of advice from her courtiers, as monarch she bears ultimate responsibility. Her silence sends a signal of exclusion and disrespect.

secret wedding

Ok Deeps, here's what's happening. I'm one of the witnesses for my friend's secret wedding - that means it's just us 2 witnesses, and the bride & groom, and the friend officiating. I feel like I should get them a nice gift, because duh it's their wedding, but I'm at a loss.
They're kind of hippie kids, they like to garden to get their produce and just moved into a new house where they haven't established a garden, so I thought something in that realm might be nice. But I'm not a gardener so I don't know what kinds of tools or seeds or whatever might be cool or useful - and I don't even know if that's appropriate.
I don't want to get them a toaster or something more traditionally given at a wedding, either, because they are slowly building themselves a tiny house in which they will eventually live, so I don't really want to just give them something else to get rid of in a couple years.
I'm working on making them a scrapbook/box kind of thing, but they also have a baby on the way and I want to give that to them for the baby gift.
SO! Suggestions? Thanks!

ETA: Thank you guys for the wonderful suggestions!

Update: Charges dropped against honor student jailed for truancy

The 17-year-old Willis High School honor student whose 24-hour stay in jail for excessive truancy drew national attention had the charge rescinded Wednesday, records show.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Lanny Moriarty, at the Montgomery County District Attorney's request, signed an order that vacates the contempt of court conviction that sent Diane Tran to jail last week.

The decision clears the way for the issue to be expunged from her record.

The action was taken, in part, after Moriarty looked at the extenuating circumstances that had resulted in Tran missing school and because her court summons had failed to notify her of her right to an attorney or to have one appointed for her, officials said.

Moriarty had counseled Tran the first time she was summoned to his court for excessive truancy April 25. He explained the importance of going to class and ordered her to start attending regularly.

But on May 23 Tran was brought back for failing to attend an additional four days as well as portions of another four days.

During her court appearance, however, Tran never revealed any personal struggles to the court.

Tran, a junior described by friends as "quiet and shy," could not be reached for comment. But her attorney, Brian Wice, said Tran was under an incredible amount of pressure from working two jobs and was unsure what to tell the court.

"She is not someone unwilling to come to class because she's attending a rock concert," Wice said. "She's an incredible gal who is working and studying sometimes 24 hours a day and contributing to her siblings' support more than a teenager should have a right to do."

U.K. Sees Rise of U.S.-Style Anti-Abortion Tactics

Polls show most U.K. citizens support a woman's right to choose abortion. But U.S.-style anti-choice tactics are picking up speed and fostering an aggressive activism movement marked by website hacking and clinic vigils.

BATH, England (WOMENSENEWS)--The United Kingdom may be a pro-choice nation in polling data, but U.S.-style anti-choice tactics are being used to attack that consensus.

Seventy percent of U.K. citizens polled in 2011 said it was a woman’s right to choose whether she continues her pregnancy.

But this pro-choice majority has long been opposed by vocal anti-abortion groups, such as the London-based Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, founded in 1966. And now U.S. anti-choice groups have expanded into the U.K., bringing more aggressive tactics that overshadow the homegrown movement.

Congress sounding increasingly like teenagers, study says

If it sounds like the debates in Congress have devolved to that of teenagers, it’s because they have.

The level of discourse in the House and Senate has dropped a full grade level -- to the equivalent of a sophomore in high school, according to a new study.

Call this the dumbing down of Congress in a partisan age. Or a shift to plain-spoken populism ignited by the new class of tea party Republicans.

But what has become clear in the new research is that the soaring oratory that once filled the floors of the House and Senate with million-dollar diction and sophisticated syntax is making way for a more modest approach.

“Congress is changing as an institution, and what you see is more and more members gearing their speeches as sound bites or YouTube clips,” said Lee Drutman, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation, which compiled the study released Monday.

“You can harken back to a golden age of Congress when members quoted Shakespeare on the floor and really engaged in debate and talked to each other and tried to reason back and forth.”

Listening to the floor debates over the last several years, the study found that newer lawmakers tended to speak at a lower grade level than the veterans of congressional speechifying.

And political moderates among both Republicans and Democrats tended to carry on at a higher grade level than those more partisan liberals or conservatives.

With that framework in mind, it should come as no surprise that the lawmakers at the bottom of the list, speaking at the lowest grade level, are among the most ardent tea party Republicans in the freshmen class.

Republican Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, Rep. Rob Woodall of Georgia and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky were the bottom three – speaking about an eighth-grade level, the study found.

“We look at it as a badge of honor,” said Mulvaney, a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina Law School, who notes that he often speaks on the floor “extemporaneously.”

“It’s a conscious decision on my part. We are trying to be clear and trying to be concise,” he added, noting that he and his wife have been known to diagram sentences at the dinner table, a byproduct of schoolteacher parents.

"I can explain the difference between 'fewer' and 'less,' " Mulvaney said in a phone interview Monday between stops at a military base and a Rotary Club in South Carolina, but acknowledged that he still stumbled over the difference between “farther” and “further.”

“I don’t think people see the polysyllabic words - or the number of words - in a sentence as a sign of your intelligence,” he said.

As a case in point, he notes fellow Republican Rep. Dan Lungren of California, a seasoned politician in Sacramento and Washington who topped the list as the lawmaker with the highest level of speech – that of a senior in college.

That makes Lungren almost a throwback – on par with the Federalist Papers (a 17.1 grade level) or the U.S. Constitution (17.8 grade level). Though it is not clear his speeches are easier to understand.

“The canard that somehow we are tearing the Constitution up just does not stand any kind of inquiry whatsoever,” said Lungren during a debate over the Patriot Act during this session of Congress. “The suggestion that somehow we are invading the civil liberties of citizens is negated by the language in the three sections of the bill that we have before us.”

Californians ranked among the better spoken overall, and the No. 2 slot went to Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-East Los Angeles), at almost a 16th grade level. Her skills were on display during last week’s debate on a GOP version of the Violence Against Women Act that Democrats largely opposed.

“I cannot in good conscience vote to pass this version of VAWA, as it erases 18 years of bipartisan efforts to respond to the needs of victims of domestic violence,” she said. “I am also disappointed that, yet again, provisions to alleviate the economic factors that keep victims in abusive relationships have not been included.”

The best and worst speeches may be in the ear of the listener, and the study noted that President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address was judged by other researchers to rank at the eighth-grade level for the third year in a row.

As for those high-powered words from the Scholastic Assessment Test, memorized and recited by legions of high schoolers, they go virtually unspoken in Congress.

Of the 100 words on SAT preparation study lists, 14 are missing entirely from the Congressional Record for this Congress – notably florid, hackneyed, ostentatious and querulous.

The most used SAT word – compromise – was said the most by Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the majority leader, who is fond of pronouncing, “Legislation is the art of compromise.”

But in this partisan environment, as the study noted, even saying the word 142 times “does not make it so.”

One Million Moms (OMM) is disturbed that JCPenney’s (JCP) is continuing down the same path of promoting sin in their advertisements. In JCP’s June catalog, there is another homosexual ad, but this time with two dads celebrating Father’s Day. The advertising booklet began arriving in mailboxes yesterday. If their marketing department follows the same plan they did in May, this mailer will be available to view on their website on June 1. [...]

It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war. JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! One day we will answer for our actions or lack of them. We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth. Scripture says multiple times that homosexuality is wrong, and God will not tolerate this sinful nature.

OMM previously attempted to boycott JCPenney when the store announced Ellen DeGeneres would be its new spokesperson, but they abandoned that boycott as a failure. There’s nothing to suggest this second effort will be end any differently.

It’s worth noting that OMM’s notion of “neutrality” is complete fiction. Same-sex families are very much a part of our society and our communities. There is nothing neutral about choosing to ignore them. One Million Moms is an anti-gay organization with an anti-gay agenda, and they clearly oppose any business that even dares acknowledge that gay people exist, let alone that they could be welcome customers.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Johnny Reid Edwards, a honey-voiced North Carolina lawyer who parlayed his boyish good looks and inspiring personal history as the son of a mill-worker into a meteoric political rise, was acquitted of one count Thursday in a corruption case, as the judge declared a mistrial on five other charges on which the jury was deadlocked.

Arizona Gay Family Terrorized By Hate Crimes; Police Tell Them It's Their Own Fault

A gay couple with four children in Gilbert, Arizona are being terrorized in a series of attacks. The series of attacks has escalated from banging on windows, to burning bushes, to anti-gay notes left on cars, to breaking into the family home and writing graffiti on the house's walls.

A poster on Democratic Underground writes:

Roy and Felix are an interracial couple - Felix is hispanic, Roy is white. A couple of the kids are Hispanic.

They recently moved to Gilbert from North Phoenix - every since then, they have had items burned on their lawns, racist and anti-gay notes attached to cars, people pounding on their doors in the middle of the night, yelling at them, and finally, a break in where graffitti was sprayed in the house last week.

Police have been called 9 times - and each time, Roy and Felix were made to feel as if the problem was their fault for being gay, hispanic, having handicapped children, etc. Roy and the kids are too scared to stay at the house - and are now staying with his sister. Fortunately, friends of the couple have mobilized - starting a facebook page, contacting media, local officials, etc. It is helping - Felix had a meeting yesterday with the Gilbert Hate Crimes Unit, and with Gilbert Internal Affairs. Congressman Flake's office has been in contact.

In yet another horrifying incident of human flesh-eating this week, a student in Maryland allegedly admitted to devouring his roommate's brain and heart.

Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old Morgan State University student, admitted to murdering his roommate Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who was reported missing last Friday, cops told the Baltimore Sun.

More detials here, along with some (internet inspired) background information on Kinyuan )

Extreme trigger warning: for intense violence, grotesqueness, and morbidity.
Originally read about this on MSNBC, which came across to me as kind of... racist. Tried to link here, just to be thorough, but I can't find the article now.
First post, and kind of lost on the tags a bit, so suggestions welcomed. Debated for a long time about racism (or something similar) tag, but couldn't decide? I think at this rate maybe OP needs a "cannibalism" tag. :( To be clear, this case appears to have been motivated not in the slightest by drugs, but rather by psychosis or mental illness, and committed in a more calculated way.

EDIT: Baltimore Sun's Justin Fenton has been posting sporadic updates on the incident and Kinyua via Twitter.
